TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mahfud MD, who acts as the Kanjuruhan football disaster fact-finding team chairperson, on Wednesday lamented the fact that the stakeholders avoided owning responsibility in the human tragedy and failed to show accountability by hiding behind each of their own regulations.
“Yes, that is what we feel right now. There are those avoiding responsibility. The PSSI says it's the LIB, they say it’s at the event organizers, and many other reasons. The broadcaster is also the same, they throw responsibility at each other, hiding behind each of their regulations,” said Mahfud at the State Palace complex on October 12.
The stakeholders referred to by Mahfud are the All-Indonesian Football Association (PSSI), football league organizer PT Liga Indonesia Baru (PT LIB), the organizing committee for the Arema FC match, and television broadcasting rights holders.
The Joint Independent Fact-Finding Team (TGIPF), which he leads, will continue to try to uncover substantial facts so that there are no more parties throwing responsibilities at each other. "Each of them is tied to their legally-binding regulations and contracts, but the substantive justice, the substantive truth that will be explored by TGIPF are aspects that will be presented to the President," said Mahfud.
Jokowi to use the fact-finding team’s recommendation in meeting with FIFA
Mahfud MD, who is the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, also said that the recommendations from the TGIPF investigation into the Kanjuruhan disaster are currently near completion. He said they are only in the structuring phase and refining recommendations. This recommendation will be used by President Jokowi to conduct a review of Indonesian football with FIFA on Monday, October 18.
"Now all the materials have been gathered by TGIPF, we only need to sharpen the recommendations," said Mahfud.
