TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency or BPBD confirmed that three students of junior high school MTsN 19 Pondok Labu died and two others were injured due to the collapsed school wall.
“The school is located in the lowlands. There are also a water canal connecting Pinang Kalijati and a river behind the school,” said the agency’s data center and information unit head Michael in a written statement, Thursday, October 6, 2022.
According to him, the three victims had been evacuated to Prikasih Hospital. “All victims are rushed to Prikasih Hospital for medical treatment. Data on other victims are being collected by the BPBD,” he added.
Based on its quick assessment, the BPBD Jakarta reported that the school wall collapsed as it could not hold the floodwater that stormed the school following heavy rain in the capital since 2 p.m.
The other suspected factor was the poor drainage system which caused the grey water to overflow.
Joint personnel consisting of the BPBD Rapid Response Team, the Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat), the Natural Resources Agency, the Emergency Response Unit (Tagana), the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), the Indonesian Military (TNI), and the National Police (POLRI) were already at the location to clean up the debris of the collapsed wall.
“The Jakarta Provincial Government is focusing on handling flood victims and safety in pumping out water around the location so that the evacuation process can run well,” Michael said.
