Jokowi Encourages Unity in G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit Speech

6 October 2022 22:39 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the 8th G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit at the parliament building in Senayan on Thursday talked about the geopolitical conflicts that have presented threats of food and financial crises on a global scale. Widodo called on the world to strengthen common grounds and overcome differences to confront these problems.

"Multilateralism is the most effective way to overcome common challenges," said Jokowi during his opening speech at the Summit on October 6.

Jokowi considers that there is no single problem that can be solved by one country alone. For this reason, the President called on all countries to sit down together to find a way out of the problems at hand.

One of the global ongoing conflicts is the Russia-Ukraine war which has unfortunately continued to rage. Russia recently held a referendum in four regions of Ukraine. Jokowi, who has met the leaders of the two countries, said that this war will not stop anytime soon.

Being Part of the Solution

Jokowi today reasserted his stand in viewing conflicts and disunity as an element that would only torment everyone. “Everyone is affected by it, everyone loses and is under threat. In fact, no one comes off as the winner,” said the President.

For this reason, he invited global parliaments to be part of the solution, acting as bridges, and carrying a peace mission. "Building dialogue and building negotiations, prioritizing togetherness to avoid division," he explained.

Jokowi believes that the G20 parliamentary forum will be very strategic to discuss the world's common agenda that requires political support from parliament. "To solve real problems faced by all citizens of the world," he said.
