Jokowi in Malang to Give Aid to Kanjuruhan Football Tragedy Victim

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo is scheduled to provide compensation to the families of the victims of the Kanjuruhan Football Stadium Tragedy in Malang, East Java today, October 5. Jokowi will immediately fly to Malang after leading the TNI's 71st birthday ceremony in the Merdeka Palace Square, Jakarta.
The Head of the Presidential Secretariat Heru Budi Hartono confirmed the news to Tempo when contacted on Wednesday, October 5.
Jokowi will provide the assistance directly, Rp50 million to each victim's family.
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa yesterday said that number of people who died in the stadium crush had increased to 131.
The Kanjuruhan Stadium incident took place on Saturday night, October 1, when supporters of Arema FC and rival Persebaya Surbaya clashed after the home team was defeated 2-3. Supporters from the losing team then came down to the pitch, prompting the police to fire tear gas that triggered fans to flee, causing a stampede and suffocation.
Indonesia's football association PSSI has suspended Arema FC from hosting matches with spectators for the rest of the season. The club is also fined Rp250 million. The disastrous match's organizing committee chairman, Abdul Haris, is banned for life from any football activity, the same as the security officer, Suko Sutrisno.
The Malang Police chief has also been discharged in the aftermath of the incident, and over 30 police officers are undergoing a code of ethics examination.
