33 Children Died in Kanjuruhan Football Stadium Tragedy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection recorded that 33 children died in the football tragedy at Kanjuruhan Stadium, Malang Regency of East Java. Of the figure, eight were girls and 25 were boys.
“Those [chidlren] who died age between 4 to 17 years,” said the ministry’s deputy for Special Child Protection, Nahar, on Monday, October 3, 2022, as reported by Antara.
According to him, the number is part of the 125 deaths released by the National Police. Meanwhile, the number of children being treated at local hospitals is still being confirmed. “We are still completing the data,” Nahar added.
The ministry along with its Malang provincial and city offices continued coordination to provide data on child victims.
At least 125 people died in the tragic incident at Kanjuruhan Stadium after the police teargassed fans who rushed to the pitch at the end of the game between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya on Saturday night, October 1, 2022.
The tear gas led to panic. People were crushed and suffocated while trying to escape the stadium. The use of crowd control gas by the police is said to violate FIFA regulations.
