KPAI Calls for Early Sex Education in Schools to Avert Sexual Violence

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) urged every school in the country to implement early sex education in a bid to prevent sexual violence against children, both inside and outside educational institutions.

“Sex education has become important because it requires a broader understanding. Even high school children rarely understand the impact of a relationship between men and women,” said KPAI Commissioner Ai Maryati Solihah in Jakarta, Monday, October 3, 2022, as quoted from Antara.

Maryati said that teaching and learning about topics related to sex and sexuality can help children to be more aware of the cleanliness and function of their vital organs.

With adequate sex education, hopefully, children will be vigilant by protecting themselves and not allowing others to touch certain body parts without their permission.

Thus, Maryati expected every child to think about cause and effect before deciding to do something with other people. She also assessed that elementary and junior high school children need to be taught which body parts should not be touched by others, such as the mouth, chest, and genitals.
