TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stated that the declaration of Anies Baswedan as a candidate for the 2024 Presidential Election will not affect the anti-graft comission's stance in the investigation of alleged corruption in hosting the Formula E race earlier this year.
"This declaration of a presidential candidate is only in the early stages, it will not be nominated when the registration starts, I assure you, the investigation process will continue," said KPK Deputy Chair Alexander Marwata at his office in Jakarta, Monday, October 3, 2022.
Alex said that the KPK would investigate this case until it reaches a conclusion. The investigation, he added, is to answer the question of whether this case is an administrative, civil or criminal violation.
"We will continue and we are not affected by the declaration in question as a presidential candidate by one of the political parties," he said.
Alex insisted that the KPK is also not affected by accusations alleging the anti-graft watchdog of trying to criminalize Anies. Alex asserted that the KPK only deals with facts.
Previously, former KPK leader Bambang Widjojanto suspected that there was an attempt to criminalize DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan in the Formula E case. "There are very strong indications that some KPK leaders want to carry out political criminalization efforts to thwart ABW," said Bambang in a text message on Saturday, October 1,2022.
