TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi stated that the governments of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia have agreed on the launching of four umrah flights from Kertajati Airport, West Java.

“This is of course good news for all of us, especially for the people in West Java and surroundings who can now depart for Umrah from Kertajati Airport,” said Budi Karya in his statement received in Jakarta, Saturday, October 1.

The minister said that he met with Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Indonesia, Syekh Essam bin Abed Al-Thaqafi to discuss that matter. Budi Karya said Kertajati Airport is targeted to serve umrah flights in November 2022.

This agreement is proof of the commitment of the Transportation Ministry to the stakeholders in aviation to revive flights from and to Kertajati Airport after the pandemic. The minister hopes that it will be followed by the opening of hajj flights from Kertajadi Airport.

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to Indonesia Syekh Essam bin Abed Al-Thaqafi also welcomed the opening of the four umrah flights from Kertajati to Jeddah.

He said that this will create more collaborations and improve bilateral relationships between both countries, especially in the transportation sector. “We'll facilitate umrah flights and Insha Allah, next will be hajj flights,” he said.

Previously, the Transportation Ministry through the air transportation directorate general sent a letter to Saudi Arabia General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) on September 7, 2022, to request umrah flight slots for Indonesia's airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air in November.
