TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cultural Heritage Expert Team (TACB) and the Jakarta Restoration Team (TSP) said the revitalization project of the Transjakarta bus stop in Hotel Indonesia (HI) Roundabout or Bundaran HI violated procedures related to cultural heritage as it did not pass the team’s meeting.
“So all objects suspected to be cultural heritage should have gone through the Restoration Team’s meeting,” said TSP Chairman Boy Bhirawa when contacted in Jakarta, Thursday, September 29, 2022.
According to him, the height of the bus stop building which is being revitalized covers the HI Roundabout area, including the Welcome Monument, which is a suspected cultural heritage (OCDB) object. Thus, it must be treated the same as a cultural heritage.
“The visuals of cultural heritage objects should not be blocked,” said Boy.
Candrian Attahiyyat, a member of the Cultural Heritage Expert Team, said there are several options to be implemented to resolve the issue: lowering the height of the bus stop or demolishing it.
“This is indeed a visual problem of historical objects,” he added.
Previously reported, historian JJ Rizal on his Twitter complained about the bus stops project in Bundaran HI which he deemed disrespectful to cultural heritage objects. He thus asked the Jakarta government to halt the project.
Jakarta-run bus operator Transjakarta planned to revitalize 46 bus stops including the Bundaran HI bus stop in 2022 with a total budget of Rp600 billion. Four bus stops in Central Jakarta, namely Tosari bus stop, Dukuh Atas bus stop, HI Roundabout bus stop, and Sarinah bus stop, are designed as the city's iconic bus stops.
