TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 rocked Jayapura of Papua tonight, September 29, 2022, at 18:34 western Indonesian time (WIB). The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) updated the strength to 5.1 after an analysis.
The agency’s acting head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, confirmed that the northwest coast of Jayapura was jolted by a tectonic quake, which was located at 2.36° South Latitude and 140.03° East Longitude, or on land 72 kilometers northeast of Jayapura Regency, Papua, and at a depth of 18 kilometers.
“It is a shallow quake triggered by active fault activity,” said Daryono, adding that it had a thrust fault mechanism.
The shaking was felt in Sentani and Genyem areas at level III on the MMI scale, which is felt by several people indoors as if a truck has passed. In Jayapura, it is felt weaker at II-III on the MMI scale.
Fortunately, the earthquake had no potential to generate a tsunami. The BMKG recorded zero aftershocks as of 19:05 WIB. Daryono thus asked residents to remain calm and avoid damaged or cracked buildings following the incident.
