Jokowi Deploys Minister, BNPB Chief to Pakistan for Humanitarian Aid

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Jokowi Widodo ordered Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) Head Suharyanto to depart for Pakistan on Monday, September 26, 2022, to hand over aid as Pakistan suffered from devastating floods and landslides.
"I received a direct order from the President to depart for [Pakistan]," said Muhadjir at the Air Force Base, Halim Perdanakusuma, East Jakarta, Monday, September 26, 2022.
Other than handing over the aid, the former rector of the Malang University of Muhammadiyah refused to share details concerning the agenda of his visit.
On Monday, September 26, 2022, the Indonesian government sent US$ 1 million in cash and basic necessities, starting from tents, clothes, blankets, sleeping bags, and generators, as well as medicines and medical equipment stored in two planes.
The first plane left on Monday afternoon, while the second one will depart on Monday evening, along with a group of representatives from the Indonesian government led by Muhadjir.
The government will also mobilize a team of health workers as requested by the Pakistani government. "Medical services will be soon provided to Pakistani citizens affected by the disasters," said Jokowi.
More humanitarian aid will be distributed not only from the Indonesian government but also from a number of foundations and NGOs. The government has given a deadline of October 3 for people who want to send assistance to Pakistan. The additional aircraft will depart on October 3, 2022.
