Papua Religious Figures Urge Governor Lukas Enembe to Obey KPK Summons

26 September 2022 08:40 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Papuan religious figure, pastor Alberth Yoku has publicly called for Papua governor Lukas Enembe to answer the summons sent by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) today over a corruption investigation. Pastor Yoku reminded the governor that it is his responsibility to God and what public servants have pledged to.

“Whoever we are and from whatever religion, we are taught to fear God in serving members of the public,” the Pastor wrote in a statement on Sunday, September 25. “Every person is taken their oath over a holy book, which means there is [God’s involvement there].”

His statement was issued after Governor Enembe failed to appear at a questioning after KPK’s initial summons last week, Antaranews reported.

"What is happening to the current governor of Papua, both regents, and mayors in Papua and throughout Indonesia, should be willing to take responsibility for what they have committed, fulfill the KPK's summons, and follow the applicable legal corridors,” the Pastor added.

He insisted that the law is the way to prove or disprove the allegations, which the public is already aware of. The Pastor said that proving oneself in a court of law is proof of responsibility for the actions committed.

Another religious leader in Pastor Yonas Wenda also urged Lukas Enembe to cooperate with law enforcers. “Papua Governor Lukas Enembe should follow the KPK legal proceedings after he has been named a suspect,” said Wenda in Jayapura, on Sunday.

Apart from urging the governor, Wenda also mentioned the mass demonstration that was held on September 20th that was in support of the governor, which he disapproves of.

He believes the demonstration should not have been exhibited as it showed a lack of understanding of the legal process and provocation for one-sided interests. "As a religious leader, I expect (Papua) Governor Lukas Enembe to follow the legal process," he said.

KPK as of Sunday has sent a second summons for Lukas Enembe, who will be questioned as a suspect in an Rp1 billion graft case. The governor’s questioning is scheduled for September 26 at the Jakarta KPK headquarters.
