Great Sumatran Fault Sparks 5.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Aceh

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that the epicenter of the earthquake that rocked Aceh in the early hours of Friday, September 23, 2022, was located at Beutong Ateuh Banggalang, Nagan Raya, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

BMKG acting head of earthquake and tsunami Daryono stated that the earthquake that struck Nagan Raya is classified as a tectonic earthquake. He also explained that the earthquake is considered a shallow quake caused by the activities of the Great Sumatran Fault.

The initial earthquake, Daryono added, was followed by an aftershock measured at a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter Scale, which was significantly weaker compared to the initial earthquake.

A more recent earthquake recorded by the BMKG occurred in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, at 10:05 AM Western Indonesia Time. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 63 kilometers away from the coastline with a depth of 109 kilometers.
