TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 5.1 magnitude earthquake jolted Central Aceh and Bener Meriah areas in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam on Friday morning, September 23, 2022. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that it did not trigger a tsunami because the epicenter was on land.
The quake was centered 34 kilometers southwest of Takengon, Central Aceh Regency at a depth of 10 kilometers and so it was classified as a shallow quake. “The shaking is strong in my position in Bener Meriah,” said a Twitter user replying to the agency’s statement on @infoBMKG.
The strongest tremor was measured on level IV of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Takengon and Bener Meriah. This means it can be felt by many people indoors and causes doors and windows to make cracking sounds. Weaker shaking of MMI level III was reported in Aceh Barat Daya and parts of Aceh Timur.
Takengon and Bener Meriah Regency had previously been rocked by an earthquake last Monday morning at 4.5 magnitudes. The epicenter was on land, too, one kilometer away from the recent quake’s location.
