Electric Stove 40% Cheaper than Gas Stove: SOE Minister's Expert Staff

22 September 2022 11:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaState-owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir’s special staff, Arya Sinulingga, stated that an electric stove is much cheaper to operate than a gas stove. The migration to induction cookers will not also disrupt or increase the supply of coal for electricity.

“[The coal supply for] household electricity is small, very small. Look at the composition, the largest [coal supply] is for industries,” said Arya after a meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) Commission VI at the Parliament Complex, Central Jakarta, Wednesday, September 21, 2022.

He also said that the conversion program will not help the power oversupply of the state-run electricity PLN. “No, it is also too small, seriously,” he added.

With the migration program, the government could cut gas subsidies. Besides, people could save more. “[Using an electric cooker] is 40 percent cheaper than LPG- fueled stove.”

Darmawan Prasodjo, president director of PLN, said the conversion program could save energy by around Rp8,000 per kilogram. Thus, the country could stop the import.

“PLN has considered the energy balance as directed by the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry and the SOE Ministry,” he said.

The ESDM Ministry Secretary General Rida Mulyana previously stated that the government was ready to distribute electric stoves worth around Rp1.8 million each. However, the ministry could not yet confirm the changes in electricity as a consequence of the program.
