Online Motorcycle Taxi Drivers Lament App Profit, Hint National Strike

16 September 2022 13:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaChairperson of the Indonesian Transportation Workers Union (SPAI) Lily Pujiati on Thursday said there are many online motorcycle taxi drivers that complain about ride-hailing app services that take more than 15 percent of a driver’s profit.

The 15 percent cut is overseen by the Transportation Ministry’s Decree No. KP667/2022, which was just enacted on September 11. She said that drivers claim ride-hailing apps are still taking their share of profits of above 20 percent.

“The drivers will continue to work but if the cut is no longer acceptable, the SPAI will call for a national strike,” said Pujiati on September 15.

Based on the complaints recorded by SPAI, 525 reports came from online motorcycle taxi drivers across Bali, Sulawesi, Jambi, Palembang, Bandung, Malang, Sidoarjo, Medan, Banten, and more.

She also insisted that drivers are unable to make a profit as they used to and that income has declined rapidly for the same hour of work. This challenging situation comes as the government had recently increased the prices of subsidized fuel.
