TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A cycling community, Bike To Work (B2W), lamented that state-owned railway operator PT KAI removed bicycle parking racks at train stations of KRL or Commuter Line following their criticism about bike loss cases in the parking area.
“We wanted to audit facilities at Commuter Line stations. But instead, the solution provided is by eliminating the parking spaces. That really doesn’t make sense,” said B2W Indonesia chairperson Fahmi Saimima in a written statement, Thursday, September 15, 2022.
The audit of bike parking facilities in all urban train stations is conducted on September 14-24, 2022, due to rampant reports of missing bikes in the parking lot. “Cases of missing bicycles in parking areas continue to occur and the trend is increasing,” it stated on Instagram, Wednesday, Sept. 14.
“Instead of launching evaluation, [PT KAI] answered it by closing the bicycle parking racks in many stations.”
Fahmi argued that in urban areas, trains and bicycles are a common travel mix as a solution for congestion, pollution or emissions, and traffic accidents that cause death.
In contrast to MRT which provides a quite good service for bicycles, the Commuter Line tends to turn a blind eye. “Cyclists using the MRT have been served quite well. A 'normal' sized bicycle is even allowed to be taken on the train outside peak hours,” he explained.
Commuter Line, meanwhile, has not fully accommodated cyclists yet. A folding bike is allowed to be taken on the train but a mountain bike and others of similar size are banned and must be left at the bike parking rack near the station.
“This is the problem, most of the parking spaces provided are not easily accessible and unsafe. There is also no bicycle storage service,” Fahmi asserted.
