TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - American think tank Atlantic Council announced on its official website on Thursday that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will be one of the honorees of its global citizen awards along with other government and non-government world figures.
This award is an annual event held in between the United Nations General Assembly series of events. The Atlantic Council has not specifically announced the exact details behind Jokowi’s award apart from the award’s motto that recognizes global leaders who have made outstanding and distinctive contributions to strengthening transatlantic relations.
Jokowi was confirmed to be absent from attending the UN General Assembly. Indonesia's presence at the High-Level Week of the UNGA meeting on September 20 to 26, 2022, will be represented by the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Director General of Multilateral Cooperation, Tri Tharyat, said during a press conference Monday, September 12, that Retno would also represent Jokowi in receiving the Global Citizen Awards.
This year the Atlantic Council will also pay special respects to former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was assassinated several months ago.
In addition to Jokowi, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson, as well as non-governmental figures such as the CEO of Google and Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, and Actor/Activist Forest Whitaker will receive similar awards.
