'Ngeri-ngeri Sedap' to Represent Indonesia at 2023 Academy Awards

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian film 'Ngeri-ngeri Sedap' has been chosen to represent the country at the 95th Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film category. Each year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences grants awards to the best feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that mostly contains non-English dialogue.

Indonesia has participated in the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film category since 1987. Nagabonar by MT Risyaf and played by Deddy Mizwar and Nurul Arifin is the first Indonesian film submitted to the Oscars race.

“However, we have never yet succeeded in bringing home an Oscar thus far,” said Ilham Bintang as a member of the Indonesia 2022 Oscar Selection Committee in his official broadcast, Tuesday, September 13, 2022.

Ngeri-ngeri Sedap is the second comedy genre film selected by the committee for the Academy Awards which will take place on March 12, 2023.

The committee consists of nine film figures, namely Deddy Mizwar as the chairman, Zairin Zain as secretary, Armantono, Cesa David Luckmansyah, Garin Nugroho, Ilham Bintang, Niniek L Karim, Slamet Raharjo, and Yadi Sugandi as members.

“Let's pray that this year, the movie can win at the Oscars,” said Deddy.

The film, which is directed and written by Bene Dion Rajagukguk, tells about the conservative life of a Batak family who faces disruption in modern life.

Starred by Arswendy Beningswara Nasution, Tika Panggabean, Boris Bokir Manullang, Gita Bhebhita Butar-butar, Lolox, and Indra Jegel, 'Ngeri-ngeri Sedap' drew more than three million viewers during its screening in theaters.
