More Protests against Fuel Price Hike in Jakarta; Police Deploy 8,350 Officers

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta Metro Jaya Police mobilized 8,350 personnel to secure mass demonstrations against the hike in fuel prices in three areas of the capital today, September 9, 2022. 

The police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Endra Zulpan said the protest would be centered in front of the DPR/MPR Building, the Horse Statue, and the Legal Aid Institute (LBH) HQ in Menteng, Central Jakarta.

“We have deployed 8,350 personnel for security,” said Zulpan in Jakarta, Friday, September 9, 2022.

A number of groups that have notified their actions include the online motorcycle taxi or online ojek community and a number of student organizations. Other than the three locations, the police also anticipated unnotified rallies. 

The police asked protestors to comply with the order and applicable laws and regulations.

5,000 Online Ojek Drivers Take to Streets Today

Igun Wicaksono, the chairman of the Indonesian Online Transportation and Service Drivers Association (PPTJDI) Grabbike, stated that about 1,000-5,000 online ojek drivers were set to hold a demonstration against the increase in fuel prices on Friday.

He explained that they would voice three demands to the government in today's demonstration, namely legalizing online ojek by issuing its regulation, allowing the service tariff to be under the authority of the regional/provincial government, and determining the application rental fee at a maximum of 10 percent.
