TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Pandjaitan said the country has risen to number 32 in the latest Travel and Tourism Development Index rankings with a score of 4.4, from previously ranked 44 with a score of 4.2.
“For the first time, Indonesia ranks above Thailand and Malaysia,” said Luhut in his speech done virtually at the Investment Forum of 5 Super Priority Destinations in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Friday, September 9, 2022.
This achievement, according to him, has made President Joko Jokowi Widodo pay more attention to the development of five super priority tourist destinations as part of the national strategic programs.
“Hopefully we can develop a variety of new tourism destinations while maintaining the characteristics of each region,” said Luhut.
Tourism, he added, has been the most affected sector in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the United Nations World Tourism Organization survey, the tourism sector in Asia Pacific countries will return to normal in 2024. It is also expected to help the national recovery efforts.
For that, Luhut emphasized that Indonesia must continue to improve and prepare itself through international agendas. Not only World Super Bike and MotoGP in Mandalika, but Indonesia will also host G20 Summit this year. In 2023, there will also be the F1 H20 competition in Lake Toba and the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo.
Many international events held and scheduled in Indonesia, Luhut Pandjaitan opined, proved that the global trust in the country is getting higher.
