Cyber Agency Investigates Major Data Leak Compromising 105 Mln Indonesians

7 September 2022 15:45 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN) is in the process of investigating an alleged data leak of 105 million Indonesians that is suspected to be the act of one account in the Breached Forums under the identity of ‘Bjorka’ on September 6. This data is believed to be from the General Elections Commission (KPU).

The compromised data of 105,003,428 Indonesians include their citizenship identification number (NIK), family card (KK), person’s identity, place and date of birth, gender, home address, and age.

“The BSSN team is coordinating and looking into the matter. It is still being processed,” said BSSN spokesperson Ariandi Putra when contacted by Tempo on September 7.

The data leak is believed to be 20 gigabytes in size and kept in comma-separated values (CSV) and 2 million of this data was offered by the alleged perpetrator as a free sample to prove the data’s validity. This data was reportedly collected from 2017 to 2020.

His data also showed a number of known Indonesian cellphone service providers.

The Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Minister Johnny G. Plate was tight-lipped when asked by Tempo about yet another major data leak kept by government-run servers.

“In relation to the cyberattack. This can be asked to the BSSN as they lead the cyber sector,” Johnny wrote in a text message on September 7. Asked about future steps that will be done by the Ministry to prevent a data leak recurrence, he only wrote; “You can ask that to the BSSN.”
