TEMPO.CO, Kupang - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) El Tari Kupang meteorology station issued a warning regarding the current status of the entirety of the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which they say is highly flammable.
"The condition of 22 regencies/cities throughout NTT is at the red level or very flammable, so people need to be aware of the potential for forest and land fires," said Head of the BMKG El Tari Kupang Meteorological Station Agung Sudiono Abadi on Friday, August 19.
He said this was related to the warning of forest and land fires (karhutla) in the NTT region which took effect on August 19.
Agung explained that the top layer of the soil surface in all areas of NTT is currently in a very flammable state. "The condition of the reeds and leaves that normally cover the forest floor is currently very dry and highly flammable," he said.
Agung appealed to the people in NTT to be aware of these conditions by taking steps to prevent forest and land fires by avoiding activities that trigger hotspots. He added that the dry conditions and strong winds made the potential for forest and land fires to spread faster and more difficult to control.
