TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin confirmed that Surya Darmadi, the owner of palm oil corporation PT Duta Palma Group, surrendered himself today, August 15, 2022. Burhanuddin explained the surrender of the graft suspect began with a letter between the latter and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO).
“We’re picking up suspect SD today,” said Burhanuddin at his office, South Jakarta, Monday, outlining that Surya sent a letter about his plan to surrender about two weeks ago. The letter was then followed up by Surya’s lawyer Juniver Girsang.
Burhanuddin said Surya departed from Taiwan boarding China Airlines flight C1761 and landed at Soekarno-Hatta Airport at 13:30 Jakarta time.
The AGO, he added, planned to immediately arrest the beleaguered conglomerate.
On August 1, 2022, the AGO named Surya a suspect for the alleged theft of a 37,095-hectare oil palm land in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau. The land was cultivated without permission by the Duta Palma Group, an oil palm plantation company owned by Surya alias Apeng, between 2003-2022.
Surya Darmadi had reportedly ignored the Attorney General's summons three times after he was named a suspect. He will be charged with corruption and money laundering which caused state losses worth Rp78 trillion.
