Prabowo Subianto Ready to Go for 2024 Election after Three Failures

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto declared himself ready to go for presidential candidacy in the 2024 general election. He conveyed the statement during the national leadership meeting after considering the aspirations of all party cadres.
"I hereby declare with a sense of responsibility, that I accept your request to be nominated as a candidate for President of the Republic of Indonesia," Prabowo said during a speech in Bogor, Friday, August 12, 2022.
Prabowo admitted that several people did ask him about the candidacy considering his three failures in past elections. But he reminded all of his cadres to keep fighting under any circumstances like the heroes and fighters in the past.
The former Commander General of the Special Forces Command has contested in the presidential election several times.
Megawati-Prabowo in 2009 Election
Prabowo and PDI-P chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri in 2009 Election contended with Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY)-Budiono and Jusuf Kalla (JK)-Wiranto in 2009.
Megawati-Prabowo lost with 32,548,105 votes, while Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto collected 15,081,814 votes. SBY-Budiono won with 73,874,562 votes.
Prabowo-Hatta Rajasa in 2014 Election
With PAN chairman Hatta Rajasa as the vice president candidate, Prabowo joined the 2014 election and met with Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Jusuf Kalla. Prabowo-Hatta lost with 62,576,444 votes, while Jokowi-JK won 70,997,833 votes.
Prabowo-Sandiaga Uno in 2019 Election
Prabowo went for 2019 election with former Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno. This was the second time Prabowo competed with Jokowi in the presidential election.
For the third time, he lost again with 68,650,239 votes. Jokowi and Ma'ruf Amin won with 85,607,362 votes.
Prabowo decided to join Jokowi's ministries as the Minister of Defense, as well as Sandiaga Uno who was appointed by Jokowi to serve as the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy.
For the 2024 election, Gerindra will join the coalition with PKB. Both parties will announce later the president and vice president candidates since Muhaimin also aimed for president candidate seat as he already made a declaration last week.
