TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukraine Ambassador to Indonesia Vasyl Hamianin called out to Indonesia to provide assistance to Ukrainian people, especially Crimean Tatar Muslims who are in need of religious worship facilities.
The ambassador talked about the visit made by Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo to Ukraine, and hopes that it could be translated into actual aid that focuses on Tatar Muslims, Antaranews reported.
Hamianin also hoped that the Indonesian Muslim community can provide support for the Tatar Muslim community in the Crimean Peninsula which asserted has suffered greatly from the Russian invasion.
Since 2014, Hamianin said, the region was occupied by Russia and until now they have been under constant repression. According to Hamianin, Tatar Muslims are under pressure from Moscow. Ironically, they are also not protected by Russian Muslims because they are considered different so it is difficult for them to practice their worship, he said.
This year, Hamianin added, Ukraine will commemorate its independence day on August 24 by holding the Ukraine Platform Summit, an online charity event with the end goal of rebuilding the war-torn country.
"We hope that His Excellency Mr. Jokowi can be involved in the Ukraine Platform Summit, especially for Tatar Muslims in the Crimea who are affected by the Russian attack," said Hamianin.
President Jokowi is included in the list of the world's most influential Muslim figures in the 2022 version of The Muslim 500.
