Risk of Jakarta Sinking Reduced as Capital Relocates to Kalimantan: Deputy Governor

9 August 2022 19:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Ahmad Riza Patria opined that the decision taken by President Joko Widodo in relocating Indonesia’s capital city from Jakarta to Kalimantan will have its own benefit for Jakarta.

According to the Deputy, the capital city's move to another island will help reduce the sinking of Jakarta, which is a problem facing the city’s coastal areas.

“Because there will be a shift in the number of people who reside in Jakarta that will relocate to IKN (New Capital of Nusantara). There will be reductions,” said Riza Patria at City Hall on Tuesday, August 9.

Groundwater consumption will also be hoped to be reduced, which he believes will take off some pressure from the city’s survivability problems. “Moving the capital city from Jakarta to East Kalimantan, among others, is reducing Jakarta’s pressure, including the reduction of groundwater,” Riza added.

To reduce groundwater consumption, the city government water subsidiary BUMD PAM JAYA seeks to accelerate the provision of piped clean water in collaboration with the central government for the implementation of the Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM).

The deputy governor also urged industrial businesses, hotels, and office centers not to overconsume groundwater. "This is also carried out by monitoring and evaluating because this is also one of the reasons for the excessive use of groundwater," said Riza.

Governor Anies Baswedan targets the drinking water service accessibility for Jakartans to reach 100 percent by 2030.
