TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake measured at magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted Tanggamus of Lampung on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at 06:15 western Indonesian time (WIB), the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported.
The quake’s epicenter was located at sea, 6.26 degrees South Latitude and 104.43 degrees East Longitude, or 90 kilometers southwest of Tanggamus and at a depth of 21 kilometers.
The agency’s acting head of quake and tsunami center, Daryono, explained the quake on the southwest coast of Lampung’s Pesisir Barat was a tectonic one. Given its epicenter and its depth, the quake was categorized as shallow due to active fault activity on the seabed.
“It has a downward shear movement mechanism (normal oblique),” he added.
The shaking was felt in Liwa areas at a weak intensity of level III of the MMI scale. As of 07:00 WIB, the BMKG did record any aftershocks.
Daryono further asked residents to remain calm and not be provoked by baseless rumors.
