TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia strongly condemned the Israeli attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, the Foreign Affairs Ministry made the statement on Sunday, August 7, 2022. The attacks launched over the weekend resulted in the deaths of civilians, including children.
“Indonesia calls upon the United Nations to take immediate and concrete steps to stop these acts of violence and aggression in order to avoid more victims and worsen the situation,” the ministry asserted.
Israel launched what it called pre-emptive strikes on Gaza on Friday, August 5, 2022. The attack was claimed as what it anticipated would be an Islamic Jihad attack that was meant to avenge the arrest of the group’s leader, Bassam al-Saadi, in the occupied West Bank.
43 Palestinians were killed over the weekend. It was estimated that half of them were civilians and two senior Islamic Jihad commanders. In response, Islamic Jihad fired rockets which sent tens of thousands of Israelis to shelters.
Recently reported, Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group agreed to a ceasefire in late Sunday after being mediated by Egypt.
