TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of potential high waves up to 6 meters in some areas on August 3 and 4. The agency said there will be strong winds in the northern and southern parts of Indonesia, with a speed of 5 to 25 knots.

"The highest wind speeds were observed in the northern waters of Sabang, the western waters of Aceh, the eastern Arafura Sea, the Yos Sudarso waters, and the Merauke waters," the BMKG said in a written statement, Wednesday, August 3.

The condition creates potentials for high waves between 1.25 and 2.5 meters in the waters of Nias Islands, Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra, the Java Sea, South Kalimantan, Jepara - Kangean Islands, Makassar Strait, Bali Sea, Banda Sea, Jayapura, among others.

Higher waves, between 2.5 and 4 meters in heights, may occur in areas including the northern parts of Malacca Strait, eastern waters of Simeulue Island, Bengkulu waters, Lampung Bay, Sumba Strait, Sumba Island, and the southern parts of Sawu Sea.

Even higher waves with a height of 4 to 6 meters may occur in the northern waters of Sabang, the western waters of Aceh-Mentawai Islands, the waters of Enggano Island, the western waters of Lampung, the West Indian Ocean of Sumatra, the southern waters of Java and Sumbawa, the Bali Strait, Lombok, Southern Alas, and the South Indian Ocean.

As these high waves have risks to voyage safety, the BMKG reminds the public to always be vigilant, especially for fishermen, and people whose activities involve riding boats.

The complete list of areas with potentials for high waves per province is available at the BMKG's website, https://www.bmkg.go.id/.
