Kominfo Tech Firm Blockages; US Embassy to Help Bridge Communication

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) claims that it is trying every possible way to reach out to tech companies that are regulated as electronic system operators (PSE) which have not registered themselves with the Ministry. This comes after the controversial move the Ministry took recently by blocking access to 7 overseas PSE firms comprising Paypal, Yahoo, Origin.com, and Epic Games.

Other tech companies that were blocked, which effectively disables their large user base to use their services, include Steam, Dota, and CS Go. However, the aforementioned has responded to the Ministry via email but has yet filled the government’s registration form.

The Kominfo Ministry announced it will ask for assistance from the United States Embassy in Jakarta, aimed to facilitate communication between the Indonesian government with US-based tech companies Yahoo, Epic Games, and Origins.

"We also ask for the help of the United States embassy to communicate with the PSE considering the communication efforts made by Kominfo so far in various ways have not received any response at all," said Director General of Informatics Applications Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, quoted from a written statement on Monday, August 1.

“The embassy is currently helping to bridge the communication,” said the director general who believes the goodwill of companies to respond to Indonesia’s request is crucial in letting the three gaming platform be used by its Indonesian subscribers.

Blocked access to Paypal was one of the largest controversies in recent days after the Communication and Informatics Ministry (Kominfo) blocked access to the multinational financial technology company. Fortunately, access was temporarily reopened on July 31 and will last until August 5, which gives time to users that kept money on this platform.
