Soldier Shot as Police Disperse Mass in Papua's Yahukimo

29 July 2022 15:21 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Indonesian Army (TNI AD) soldier was shot when the police dispersed the people visiting the Dekai Police Station, Yahukimo Regency, Papua.

“It is true that the army chief suffered a gunshot wound in his left thigh on Wednesday night, July 27, which was allegedly carried out by a member of the Cartenz Peacekeeping Task Force. We deeply regret that this incident occurred amid the rising solid relationship between the two,” said the Commander of the 172/PWY Resort Military Command (Korem), Brig. Gen. JO Sembiring in Jayapura, Friday, July 29, 2022.

Sembiring explained that he received a report that the incident began when the soldier was about to eat at one of the stalls and then involved in a civil dispute. The soldier thus filed a report to the Dekai Police Office. He got shot when trying to break up the disputing crowd.

The case would be investigated. If the soldier is found guilty, he will be processed according to the provisions. “The Commander of the XVII/Cenderawasih Regional Military Command (Kodam) has ordered that those who are guilty will be given sanctions,” said Sembiring.
