Massive Liquid CO2 Leak at Karawaci Public Street, Police Explain Incident

7 July 2022 10:31 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Karawaci police sector is currently investigating the massive CO2 gas leak in one of the region’s public streets which had gone viral on the internet showing motorists in traffic traveling slowly, with some stopping in disbelief, as the road they traveled over was replaced by thick white smoke.

According to the Head of Karawaci Police sector, Commissioner Hasoloan Situmorang, the CO2 leak came from PT. Gasindo Andalan Sukses - a company in the field of industrial, medical, and specialty gases - and that company supervisor and witnesses have been questioned.

“We are still looking into the incident with witnesses already questioned,” said the police chief on July 6.

According to witness testimony at the location, the incident happened on the morning of Wednesday at 07:00. At the time, Gasindo’s employee Asep Maulana (36) was in the middle of refilling CO2 into another tank with the help of another employee by the name of Jaya Saputra (64) who was given the task to close the tap, but was unsure which tap to turn.

This was the moment where the wrong tap was opened, which caused two tons of liquid CO2 - which is used for fire extinguishers - to rush out and went out to the street outside of the company, the police chief said.
