TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, in attending the 76th Bhayangkara Day at the Semarang police academy on Tuesday called for the National Police (Polri) institution to put forth prevention and a humanist approach to maintain public order.
“Conduct police actions in a humanist way yet assertive when needed. Make law enforcement the last attempt,” said the President in Central Java on July 5.
Jokowi stressed that the National Police must enforce the law by following procedures and upholding human rights and establishing trust with members of the public. He then highlighted the public satisfaction toward the police institution and cited a recent survey by a news outlet suggesting 58.3 percent trustworthiness, which he believes is enough.
“The latest survey by Kompas that I saw showed 58.3 percent respondents say Police’s actions align with the Presisi [tagline]. But remember, there is 28.6 percent who say otherwise,” said Jokowi.
The President elaborates that he constantly monitors Police performance through coverage on conventional media and social media platforms and calls for police to be mindful before conducting activities.
