TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The local volcanic observation center for Mount Ile Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) announced that the 1,423-meter stratovolcanic mountain had erupted and spewed volcanic ash reaching 1,300 meters above its crater. The eruption took place on July 1, at 4:29 p.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA).
The head of the observation post, Stanis Asakian, in a written statement on Friday afternoon said the thick ash cloud tended to travel to the west of the mountain, Antaranews reported.
Local reports said the thundering sound and tremors were felt by locals living in its vicinity. Authorities strongly suggested hikers, tourists, and locals to avert hiking near its vicinity and issued a safe perimeter zone of 3-4 kilometers.
The observation post issued a recommendation based on its analysis and decided to hold the volcanic mountain’s status at alert level III.
