TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Cilacap IV unit of Kilang Pertamina Internasional (PT KPI), the refining & petrochemical business group of Pertamina, is investigating the source of the oil spill in Cilacap waters, especially the Donan River, Central Java. A company official said that based on its physical form, what spilled was crude oil, and the volume is estimated at around 1,900 liters.
"The cause is still under investigation," Cecep Supriyatna, area manager of communication, relations & CSR of PT KPI RU IV Cilacap, told reporters on Tuesday, June 28.
Before the oil spill, he said, there was an oil loading activity at Area 70 Pertamina Cilacap, transferring oil from the pipeline to a tanker. According to Cecep, the company is still investigating whether the oil spilled from the tanker or the distribution pipe.
Cecep said Pertamina Cilacap Refinery immediately sent a team to clean up the spill after receiving reports of the incident. The team is now trying to localize the oil spill by using an oil boom, after which the oil will be skimmed and put back into the tank.
According to drone footage, the area affected by the oil spill is not too wide. "Only around the Batre Pier or Wijayapura," he explained.
The oil spill was first discovered by fishermen on Monday afternoon around 17:30 local time. At around 19:00 that evening, locals said that there was a pungent smell.
