TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz discussed efforts to strengthen cooperation in new and renewable energy sources in Indonesia during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Elmau, Germany, Monday, June 27, 2022.
They also talked of strengthening economic cooperation and the G20 presidency. “As the largest economy in Europe and Southeast Asia, Indonesia and Germany have a huge opportunity for economic ties in the new and renewable energy sector and high-tech industrial sector,” said Widodo in a press release, Monday.
He expressed hope that Germany could become a partner in managing the new and renewable energy sources of up to 474 gigawatts in the archipelago. He also appreciated Germany's Green Infrastructure Initiative with a funding commitment of EUR2.5 billion for five years.
Indonesia, he went on, had prepared an electric vehicle ecosystem from upstream to downstream, from mining and nickel smelting to the production of batteries and electric cars. Jokowi saw the potential for cooperation in the development of the semiconductor industry and making this industry part of the global chip supply chain.
“Indonesia is also ready to follow up the cooperation in the construction of the German Industrial Quarter, which can later become a production base and global supply chain,” he remarked.
The state head further expressed appreciation for Germany's support for the Indonesian G20 Presidency. In the midst of a very complex and difficult world situation, he hoped that Indonesia and Germany will continue to maintain the G20 as catalysts for economic recovery.
Accompanying President Jokowi in the bilateral meeting with the German Chancellor were Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi and Indonesian Ambassador to Germany Arif Havas Oegroseno.
