TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe House of Representatives (DPR) is set to approve the bill on mother and child welfare or RUU KIA, which contains the provision of 6-month maternity leave as its initiative in a plenary meeting next Thursday, June 30, 2022.

“The DPR's legislative board has agreed that the mother and child welfare bill or RUU KIA will be approved as a DPR initiative bill in the nearest plenary meeting,” said House speaker Puan Maharani in a statement, Friday, June 24, 2022.

According to her, the bill is necessary in realizing family welfare, which is an assurance to create superior human beings in order to achieve Indonesia Emas or Golden Indonesia 2045 vision. The welfare of mothers and children, she said, must be the key to achieving this goal.

“It is the state’s duty and responsibility to advance the human resources through the welfare of the families of each of its people," Puan said.

She ensured that the bill will not conflict with other laws, including Law No. 13 of 2003 concerning manpower, as worried by the public.

“DPR, along with the government, will seek input from all relevant stakeholders. And we hope to find the best solution that can accommodate the interests of all elements,” Puan added.

RUU KIA to be discussed by the DPR emphasizes the importance of targeted, integrated, and sustainable welfare of mother and child. One of them is through the fulfillment of the basic rights of parents. Other than six months' maternity leave for working mothers, the bill also proposes paternity leave to husbands for 40 days.
