ESDM Teams Up with PLN, Pertamina to Expedite Electric Motorbike Conversion

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry cooperated with state-owned electricity firm PLN and state-owned gas and oil firm Pertamina to accelerate the conversion of fuel-powered motorbikes to electric ones.

This collaboration was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Transition Working Group (ETWG) forum in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, Friday, June 24, 2022.

ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif represented by the ESDM Ministry Secretary-General Ego Syahrial said the government continued to boost the use of battery-based vehicles in the country and targeted 6 million electric motorcycles to operate by 2025.

“We strongly encourage this conversion. With the cooperation agreed today, it is hoped that the target of 6 million electric motorcycles in Indonesia by 2025 can be achieved,” said Ego in an official statement on June 24, 2022.

In 2022, the ESDM Ministry is determined to convert 1,000 units of fuel-fueled motorbikes to electric motorbikes. It is also targeted that there will be 13 million electric two-wheeled motorized vehicles by 2030.

Meanwhile, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said his side was ready to support the conversion program from fuel-powered motorcycles to electric motorcycles to accelerate the target of Carbon Neutral in 2060.
