TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan on Thursday paid a visit to East Jakarta’s Klender market to check on prices of daily staple food commodities. During his visit, the Minister also shopped for a number of daily commodities such as chili pepper and red onions.
This comes after the prices of cayenne peppers soared to Rp100,000 rupiah per kilogram. The minister asked a merchant on prices of pepper and initially thought prices had dropped but was quickly clarified by the merchant that different types of pepper vary in price and that some are still sold at high prices.
“Curly peppers are indeed Rp90 thousand but the ones sold at Rp100,000 per kilogram is cayenne pepper, it even reached Rp120 thousand,” said the merchant to the Minister.
Market merchants complained to the Minister regarding the soaring prices of foods that caused sales to drop, but Hasan instead answered by saying “It’s just a rare event. Now it’s starting to drop again,” said the Minister who continued his tour by shopping in bulk.
According to data from the Trade Ministry’s Market and Staple Goods Monitoring System (SP2KP) red onions nationally saw 2.67 percent price increases while cayenne pepper logged a 0.54 percent price increase on June 22.
