TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia Vasyl Hamianin argued that every partnership that embraces Moscow will potentially become a source of funding for Russia to continue its invasion of Ukraine. Vasyl's comment was made following a Russian news agency report on Vladimir Putin's plan to meet with President Joko Widodo or Jokowi in Moscow by the end of June.
Sources from Kremlin told Russian news agency TASS on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, that President Vladimir Putin will meet with Jokowi in Moscow on June 30, 2022. The source said that Jokowi's visit would be very important.
"This is going to be a very important visit. We are preparing for it now," the source said. "President Joko Widodo of Indonesia will visit Moscow on June 30," TASS reported on June 14, 2022.
The Ukraine ambassador responded by saying, "I will not talk about Indonesia's position, as it is up to the government, House of Representatives (DPR), and its people to decide," said Hamianin when Tempo contacted him via phone interview on Thursday, June 16, 2022.
"But it must be understood that every dollar Russia receives, every barrel of oil sold out is used to finance this aggressive war," said the Ambassador.
Moreover, Hamianin said that the source of money flowing into Russia is largely used to fund the killing of civilians and ravaging cities in Ukraine. Hamianin argued that non-block countries such as Indonesia have the opportunity to take action and help stop the war by siding with the colonized country and condemning or sanctioning aggressor nations.
"Sanctions against Russia are aimed at stopping aggression only. No money, no war. We have to reduce Russia's sources of income," said the Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia.
The Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah has yet to confirm this plan while the Head of the Presidential Secretariat Heru Budi Hartono did not respond to Tempo's question sent via Telegram.
However, the Ukrainian Ambassador to Indonesia hopes peace would come to fruition if President Joko Widodo’s role in his Russia visit is an arbiter of war.
