Clean Water Coverage in Jakarta Only Reach 64%: PAM Jaya

10 June 2022 16:44 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaJakarta-run tap water company PAM Jaya blamed the poor coverage of clean water in the capital which is presently at 64 percent on the limited sources of raw water.

"Raw water sources in Jakarta, such as rivers, lakes, and ponds, cannot answer the supply for 36 percent of the people who have not been served," said PAM Jaya Service Director Syahrul Hasan in an online discussion about water sources on Wednesday, June 8, 2022.

Syahrul explained that PAM Jaya has targeted to expand the coverage to 100 percent by 2030. However, collaboration is necessary, including with the central government, regional governments, and private parties.

Director of Housing and Settlement Areas at the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas), Tri Dewi Virgiyanti, revealed that safe water sources in the capital could only accommodate around six percent of the residents' needs.

Low access to clean water, in fact, does not only occur in Jakarta but also in other regions across the archipelago, especially in urban areas. Several studies had predicted that Indonesia will face a water crisis in the next few years.

One of them is the 2015 World Resource Institute's study which noted that Indonesia is a country at high risk of a water crisis in 2040.
