TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo targeted Indonesia to have 30 plant nurseries within the next three years or by 2025. Jokowi explained that the nursery is fundamental for the breeding of tree seedlings to be planted on critical land.
"If we have 30 nursery centers with a yearly production of 10 to 12 million, it means around 360 million seedlings will be produced in one year," said the President at the inauguration of the Rumpin Nursery in Bogor, West Java, Friday, June 10, 2022.
Jokwoi explained that tree seedlings from the nursery will be planted in landslide-prone areas, such as watersheds, especially in upstream areas. Jokowi mentioned that the tree planting had already commenced in Ciliwung area.
On this occasion, the President also delivered his gratitude to the World Bank, the German government, and big companies that helped build the nursery. The nursery had also helped the mangrove forest rehabilitation program in the archipelago.
Jokowi targetted that by 2024, 600,000 hectares of mangrove will have been rehabilitated. The program has been underway in the peatlands of Riau, North Sumatra, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and Bali.
"We know that mangrove forests can suppress or absorb carbon emission four times better than ordinary forests or tropical rain forests," said Jokowi.
