Jokowi Inaugurates Future EV Battery Production Facility in Batang

8 June 2022 13:11 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi on Wednesday officially inaugurated the second development phase of the Batang Integrated Industrial Estate (KITB) for electric battery production - which will end up in electric vehicles. The President claims that an integrated production facility is the first in the world.

“I am pleased the construction of the electric battery industry has commenced,” said Jokowi in Batang, Central Java on June 8.

The LG Energy Solution, reported earlier, is set to invest in the KITB as the consortium will produce batteries for electric vehicles with a capacity of 3.5 million units and 200 gigawatts annually. LG, in total, invested a reported 9.8 billion US Dollars (Rp142 trillion) and aims to absorb 20 thousand workers.

President Jokowi claims the LG consortium investment is the first in the world that integrates the upstream and downstream production elements of electric vehicles, starting from nickel mining, smelting, precursor and cathode plant, and electric vehicle’s electric power units.

"This is still coupled with the battery recycling industry from upstream to downstream. End to end everything is done in this investment," said the President.
