TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Youth and Sports Minister Zainudin Amali on Wednesday said the achievement of Indonesian athletes at the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, which finished in the top-three medal standings, will be the main motivation to compete in the Paris Olympics 2024.
Before the quadrennial global sporting event, he said, Indonesian athletes will enter a number of competitions such as the SEA Games 2023 in Phnom Penh and the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
"In 2023 there will be the Cambodian SEA Games and the Asian Games in China. We hope this will be a series of preparations according to the National Sports Grand Design (DBON) which is the basis for achievement development," the Minister wrote in a statement on May 25, Antaranews reported.
He also noted that the President’s wishes to see Indonesia finish ahead of the previous Games were answered in the 31st SEA Games by winning 69 gold medals, 92 silver, and 80 bronze with 499 athletes, which is significantly lower than the athletes mobilized to the Philippines SEA Games before the Vietnam Games.
Amali announced that the country’s DBON program will tighten parameters for athletes and will focus on athlete quality rather than quantity.
