TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Spokesman for the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry, Teuku Faizasyah, responded to the travel ban imposed by the Saudi Arabia Government on a number of countries, including Indonesia, due to COVID-19.
Faizasyah stated that Indonesia has managed to suppress the number of positive cases. “Indonesia has conveyed to the Saudi government about its COVID-19 handling, that Indonesia has succeeded in reducing the number of positive cases,” he said on Monday, May 23, 2022.
Based on the COVID-19 data from Johns Hopkins University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) as of May 22, Indonesia recorded only 227 new daily cases, while the weekly case number amounted to 259 cases.
Faizasyah added that the pandemic condition in the archipelago is better than in many countries in general. He could not yet provide further information regarding the impact of the travel ban.
As widely reported, Saudi Arabia barred its citizens from traveling to 16 countries, including Indonesia, India, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and Vietnam, following the re-outbreak of COVID-19 and the rapid surge in the number of daily infections over the past few weeks.
