TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The closing ceremony for the 31st SEA Games 2021 in Vietnam is set to hold on Monday, May 23, with Indonesia finishing the biennial sporting event third in the overall medal tally.
As of Sunday, Indonesian athletes from multiple athletic classes managed to collect 69 gold medals, 91 silver medals, and 81 bronze. This ranks Indonesia behind first-place finisher Vietnam with 205 gold, 125 silver, and 116 bronze) and runner-up Thailand with 92 gold, 103 silver, and 136 bronze.
This comes as an improvement compared to previous years that saw Indonesia finish fourth and fifth in the final medal tally but is below the 2011 achievement that saw Indonesia rank number one.
The Indonesian rowing and shooting athletes in the 31st SEA Games collected multiple gold medals as there were 8 gold medals collected between the two classes. Canoeing comes second by winning 8 gold medals followed by archery with 5 gold.
Unfortunately, other classes on average did not reach their goal despite contributing to the gold medal tally such as karate (4 gold) and Pencak silat (1 gold). However, this result comes positively as it aligns with President Jokowi’s hope for Indonesia to end up in the final classification higher than in the previous Games.
The following is the current medal classification as of Monday, May 23 06:00 WIB.
