TEMPO.CO, Bukittinggi, West Sumatra - The Bukittinggi city police in West Sumatra have made the largest drug haul in history by seizing 41.4 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth Rp62.1 billion.

The crystal meth was seized from different areas under the jurisdiction of the Bukittinggi city police, Chief of the West Sumatra Provincial Police Inspector General Teddy Minahasa informed on Saturday.

He said the police have named eight suspects who played different roles in the drug case. They have been identified by their initials as AH (24), DF (20), RP (27), IS (37), AR (34), AB (29), MF (25), and N (39).

"Most of the suspects live in Bukittinggi and Agam," he added.

Two of the suspects are drug users, three are small traffickers, and three others are big-shot traffickers, he said.

If found guilty, three of the suspects found trafficking more than one kilogram of crystal meth may face the death sentence or a life sentence in accordance with Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics, he informed.

Bukittinggi city police are still investigating the modus operandi used to traffic crystal meth in the city, he said.

Drug abuse still tops the list of crimes in West Sumatra, with 1,043 cases recorded by police, he added.
