TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA Aceh) has successfully evacuated a 35-kilogram Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii) that found itself trapped inside a palm oil plantation in the East Aceh regency managed by state-plantation firm PTPN I.
Head of the Aceh BKSDA Agus Arianto said the evacuation took place on Thursday, May 19, after its team received a report regarding the incident on Sunday, Antaranews reported.
The evacuation team involved a joint effort from the Natural Resources Conservation Resort (KSDA) and partners from the Human Orangutan Conflict Response Unit - Orangutan Information Center (Hocru-OIC).
“We immediately mobilized a team to rescue the protected wildlife,” said Agus.
The team also tested the healthy male orangutan for Covid-19 and found it was healthy. “The test was necessary to ensure he would not infect other orangutans once it is reintroduced to its habitat again,” Agus explained.
He added that the protected species will be reintroduced to a proper habitat for orangutans in the protected forest located at the Pante Jeumpa village in the Aceh Tamiang Regency.
