TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Mahfud MD on Wednesday reminded legal experts joined in the State Administrative Law Association/State Administrative Law Lecturers (APHTN-HAN) to steer clear of political favoritism.
"Why is this crucial? Because of two aspects. Legal experts often get trapped in political favoritism," Mahfud said in a national symposium on constitutional law on May 18.
He elaborated on situations when this often happens to constitutional law experts who get tangled in arguments between conflicting political agendas. However, he understands that having conflicting viewpoints does not pose a problem.
The former state minister also asked the legal experts in this association to not do mistakes in conducting legal analysis. "Scientists, academic organizations like you must be clear," he said.
Mahfud then opened up the opportunity to establish an Ethics Court for this association. He said that the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court (MK) Jimly Asshiddiqie often brought up this new body but there have been no further responses.
However, Mahfud is still questioning the form of the Ethics Court that he wants to form. "What is the Ethics Court like? because ethics when it is punished it is no longer ethics. Law is ethics that is punished, given a form and ratified," he said.
Mahfud continues to support the establishment of an Ethics Court in the hope that it can resolve the problem of analysis and political views that take sides.
